Our Favorite Lunch Spots in Golden Hill

Natalie Andrews   •   August 01, 2018

Everyday, at about 11:30AM, the varied, casual chatter around the Reader Digital office usually converges on one very serious question: What should we order for lunch?

While we’re a stone’s throw away from vibrant neighborhoods like South Park, Barrio Logan, and East Village, our location is right in the heart of scenic Golden Hill. And since there’s nothing like taking a walk in one of San Diego’s most beautiful communities, the answer to the big lunch question can usually be found within one square mile of the office.

Below, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite midday meal spots, so you too can enjoy the best of what Golden Hill has to offer.

Influx Cafe

A classic coffeehouse on Broadway, Influx Cafe serves up some of the best pour overs, lattes, and pastries in the area. For lunch, go with one of their classic sandwiches made with fresh focaccia bread and drizzled with olive oil, salt, and pepper. With both vegan and vegetarian options, there’s something tasty for everyone on their menu. @olalayum

55 Thai Kitchen Golden Hill

As one of Golden Hill’s newer establishments, 55 Thai Kitchen provides quality Thai comfort food perfect for all seasons. From fried rice to noodle plates to curry and soups, 55 Thai has transformed the neighborhood lunch game with their delicious, affordable meals. You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled, though; they’re located within an unassuming convenience store. Our favorite dishes? The Chicken Massaman Curry or the Tom Kha Noodles.

Pizzeria Luigi

If you’re craving a New York-style pie, Pizzeria Luigi (Luigi’s for short) is destined to be your new favorite pizza place. Luigi’s has been serving Golden Hill its signature slices, as well as some new and unconventional flavor combinations (like the BLT pizza, pictured) since 2005. Plus, their craft beer list is perfect for an evening happy hour!

Giorgino’s

Giorgino’s offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, cheeseburgers, and salads — but we visit them for their delectable cheesesteaks. We’ve yet to find a place that does cheesesteaks as well as Giorgino’s, probably because they serve them up on genuine Philadelphia Amoroso’s rolls. Whether beef or chicken, Whiz wit or wit’ out, it doesn’t get any more authentic than this!

Garlic Shack

If you’re feeling gastronomically adventurous and want to stimulate your taste buds, stop by Garlic Shack for something bold and flavorful. From grilled and melted sandwiches, to loaded fries, and even some Asian-inspired fare, the menu features a range of items to delight your inner foodie. Pictured is one of their seasonal specials: the Cubano. @garlic_shack

Krakatoa

Krakatoa Cafe, named after the Krakatoa Volcano in Indonesia, dishes up delicious pastries (some vegan and gluten free!) and fresh-roasted, locally sourced coffee out of a Craftsman-style house on 25th Street. They also offer a variety of sandwiches, all of which are named after famous volcanoes around the world. The coffeeshop’s shaded wrap-around patio offers a cool oasis for enjoying an al fresco breakfast or lunch.  @krakatoacoffeehouse
